About Women For Change
Women for Change (WFC) is one of South Africa’s leading voices in the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. Founded in 2016, we use the power of social media to raise awareness, support survivors, and drive real change.
With an online community of over 520,000 and 40 million monthly impressions, WFC is a trusted movement where survivors find support, share their stories, and demand justice. Through relentless advocacy and public engagement, WFC continues to be a leading force in the fight against GBV in South Africa. We envision a South Africa where every woman and child can live free from violence, and are empowered by dignity, equality, and freedom, a world where the words #MeToo are no longer necessary.
The Unburied Casket
Last year, 5,578 women were murdered in South Africa – a 33.8% rise in femicide. To make that number impossible to ignore, we built a casket 33.8% larger than standard, adorned with thousands of handwoven Zulu beads – each purple bead representing a life stolen.
Crafted by women for women, using traditional symbols of strength and resilience, the casket holds the faces of some of the sisters we lost. It was carried through Pretoria to the Union Buildings, and handed over to the Presidency alongside 152,000 signatures demanding Gender-Based Violence and Femicide be declared a National Disaster.
